It’s a lonely job. Working in the field of nutrition and health promotion for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), that is.
It’s lonely because there are few paid positions – though the need is huge.
It’s lonely because it’s not a “sexy” topic – but the outcome is dramatic.
It’s lonely because there is little new research (or old research) to guide you – though there is great need.
It’s lonely because it feels like every teaching tool needs to be created so it can be understood – yet the joy the learning brings is contagious.
It’s lonely because it requires advocacy skills – which actually change a life.
This is rewarding, but hard work!
There’s no need to do it alone – not anymore!
We can Connect, Collaborate, and Create and earn CPEs through the Phronesis Study Group.
The Phronesis Study Group is offered by Phronesis Publishing for Dietitians and other health care professionals specifically for those of us working with people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Study Groups, as defined by the American Dietetic Association, are more flexible than a Journal Club, In study groups members share and discuss lectures, videos, self-study programs, books, and more. For areas of practice such as intellectual and developmental disabilities, this flexibility is essential for knowledge and skills to provide the best nutrition and support practices.
Here’s how it works.
Each meeting has a specific topic. Phronesis Publishing is responsible for announcing the topic, gathering the resources, and distributing (if appropriate) them one week before the meeting. Phronesis Publishing will take care of clearing any copyright considerations for articles and resources (This is an academic venture, companies outside of academic journals may require a fee or other acknowledgement). Those who participate regularly will have greater input in the discussion topics.
